Sweet Word Sunday: July 7, 2013 ~ Freedom
Freedom. There's nothing like it. Let's take a look at what my family view's as "Freedom" because nothing is cuter then quotes from the family!
Here's the question:" When you hear the word freedom, what does it bring to mind?"
Husband: "Fore fathers, where we got our freedom from, and the Constitution ~ which doesn't mean as much as it used to."
Daughter: "It makes me think I can do what I want without anyone telling me I can't."
Twin #1: "USA, Heaven, Texas, also freedom would be having your own place."
Twin #2: "Pancake wars!"
There are many who would say in our Country we no longer have freedom, yet I beg to differ. There are some who say if we were really free we wouldn't have to work, yet again I beg to differ. There are still some who say the cost of freedom is too high, and we would do better under the watchful eye of a dictator. To that I surely beg to differ.
Freedom. There are costs. There are delays. There are often tears shed, blood lost, and lives taken. Freedom doesn't come without a cost. Freedom doesn't come without a war. Freedom doesn't come without taking chances, determination, endurance, and pain. Freedom.
Here is one of the best scriptures I found on the word "Freedom".
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1 NIV
Let's look at this in another version of the Bible ~ just for another perspective. (Please NEVER be so close minded that you cannot appreciate more than one perspective.)
In [this] freedom Christ has made us free [and completely liberated us]; stand fast then, and do not be hampered and held ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery [which you have once put off]. Galatians 5:1 Amplified
Freedom comes at a price. For Christians ~ the price was the crucifixion of Jesus Christ (God's OWN son) and resurrection. Nothing else. There is no freedom in trying to work your way to Heaven, because it just can't be done. There is no freedom to living under a legalistic faith that argues you have to follow a long list of rules that hinder your focus on God alone. Jesus came to fight for that!
Freedom comes at a price for Americans, because we have the military who stands for us all around the world ~ fighting various battles and wars simply to keep us free in a very beautiful and ordered way that is anything but simple. Lives at the front line willing to lay down the highest price to save this freedom we have all come to know.
Freedom in our own lives, comes at a high price as well. Often at the heart of denial. Freedom is amazing, but too often we have to realize what it is that is holding us back from living a free life. Is it the burden of listening to lies and receiving them as truth? Is the fact that we LIKE to be our own worst enemy?
Freedom comes in many forms and means something different to everyone. One thing I can tell you is no matter how free we may be, too often we are slaves to something/someone that keeps us from true long term freedom. What is it? That is for us each to figure out and stand steadfast until we find a resolution. It may mean a battle. It may mean calling a truce. It may mean something different for you then me but one thing is true. Freedom always comes at a price.
